Art: Perspective

Our art learning this half-term has enriched our historical learning about the Mayans.

We began our learning journey with the learning question ‘What is perspective?’. We looked at a variety of different photographs and identified three different features: the vanishing point, the horizon and perspective lines. We then used these concepts to sketch a pathway lined with trees.

Our learning progressed to exploring the significance of a vanishing point more closely. Using a range of photographs, sketches and cartoons for inspiration, we had a go at using perspective to draw realistic and proportional landscapes.

The next step in our learning journey was focussing on how perspective and cross-hatching can be used to draw cubes – this would ensure we had a strong foundation for our final outcomes for this unit of learning. We looked at how we can show the source of light by using different intensities of cross-hatching.

The greatest challenge was our final pieces – Mayan temples. This proved very difficult; a growth mindset was essential! We put together all the skills we had practised on our learning journey so far to draw our very own mayan temples. We’re very proud of what we’ve achieved!
