Our first DT topic of the year went brilliantly. We used our prior scientific knowledge of circuits to help construct our own war planes that actually flew. We made a simple circuit using a motor to spin the propeller; we needed to think carefully about which way the motor needed to spin to ensure that the air was pushed backwards to propel the plane forwards. The fuselage was made from wood with card wings and a tail. We discovered that the shape and size of the tail was very important; if the tail was too small then the plane wouldn’t fly properly. Another important success criteria was to ensure that we correctly identified the centre of gravity as this is where we needed to locate the hook from which to hang our planes. We were so excited and proud to get our models flying!
