Our learning in English has related to how to write discussion and persuasion texts. This unit linked to our current learning in science so we have become Charles Darwin experts. We began by looking at Charles’ dilemma about whether or not to marry Emma Wedgewood; we wrote a letter in role as Darwin to his father discussing the pros and cons and requesting his advice.
Inspired by Charles Darwin and the debate surrounding his groundbreaking work The Descent of Man, we stepped back into the nineteenth century to explore the controversy sparked by his theory. After examining a range of contemporary reactions, we wrote formal letters to a newspaper expressing our own viewpoints. By engaging with the historical context and differing opinions of the time, we strengthened our persuasive writing skills and gained a deeper understanding of how revolutionary ideas can challenge society and ignite public debate.
