Fractions are fun! Maths

Year 2 and 3 have been diving into the world of fractions recently — and what a brilliant time we’ve had! To help us get to grips with this tricky topic, we’ve been doing lots of hands-on, practical activities to really bring our learning to life.

We started by making our very own fraction walls. Using strips of coloured paper, we carefully cut and labelled different fractions — halves, quarters, thirds, eighths and more — then built them up into walls so we could see how they all fit together. It was a great way to understand how fractions work and spot which ones are equivalent.

We also practised ordering fractions, using the more than (>) and less than (<) signs to compare different amounts. It really made us think carefully about the size of each fraction and how they relate to one another.

Our learning didn’t stop there though! We moved on to plotting fractions on number lines and working out missing numbers in sequences. This helped us visualise where fractions belong and made tricky concepts much clearer.

One of our favourite parts was making fraction fact families. For example, we know that one third of 21 is 7 — and we can prove it because 7 x 3 = 21, 3 x 7 = 21, and 21 divided by 3 = 7. It was a fantastic way to link our multiplication and division knowledge with our new fractions learning.

Using bar models has also helped us see how numbers can be split into equal parts, and we finished off our fractions topic by tackling word problems, using everything we’ve learned to solve real-life fraction challenges.

The children have shown brilliant teamwork, resilience, and problem-solving skills throughout — and the best part is, we’ve all agreed that fractions are actually lots of fun!

Well done Year 2 and 3 — you’re becoming real fraction experts!
