Telling the Time – Maths

Over the past few weeks, Haffydown Class have been learning all about time through a variety of practical and engaging activities. The children have been working on telling the time to the nearest half hour, quarter hour and five minutes, and have shown great enthusiasm and determination throughout.

The children explored the different parts of a clock, learning what each hand does and how they move. They practised writing the time on clocks and used simple rhymes to help them remember how the clock works, which supported their understanding and confidence. Making their own clocks using paper plates was a particular highlight and helped bring their learning to life.

Alongside this, the children learned about the months of the year, including how many days are in each month, how many days there are in a year and what makes a leap year. Using Cuisenaire rods, they built and compared the number of days in different months, helping them visualise and deepen their understanding. The children also took part in problem-solving activities and discussions, explaining their thinking and learning from one another.

Some children who wear watches have been especially keen, regularly checking the time and proudly sharing it with the class during the day. It has been lovely to see the children’s confidence grow as they develop this important life skill.
