In Year 2, as part of our “Animals Including Humans” topic, we’ve been learning all about how to stay healthy through healthy eating, exercise, and good hygiene.
We started by learning about the Eatwell Plate, which helps us understand the different food groups we need to stay healthy. The plate is divided into sections for fruits and vegetables, carbohydrates, proteins, dairy, and oils and spreads. By following this guide, we can make sure our meals are well-balanced and full of nutrients!
Miss Myers brought in a variety of foods, and we had the opportunity to build our own Eatwell Plates! We placed different foods into the correct categories and learned how to create a balanced meal. The best part? We got to taste some of the foods and test out different flavours!
We also explored germs, which are tiny, invisible things that can make us sick. Germs can spread easily from person to person, so it’s important to wash our hands to stop them from spreading. To learn more about how germs work, we took part in the Pepper Experiment. We filled two bowls with water, added pepper to represent the germs, and then dipped our fingers into the water—one hand without soap and one with soap. We were amazed to see that the pepper “jumped” away from the soap-covered fingers, showing us how soap helps to remove germs!
This was such a fun and exciting topic, and we loved learning and experimenting together as a year group. We now understand how important it is to eat well, stay active, and wash our hands to stay healthy!
