The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark

This week we have really enjoyed reading ‘The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark’ by Jill Tomlinson. The story was a great follow on from learning about celebrations that happen at night. We loved hearing the different adjectives for the dark and thought of our own. We talked about what the word ‘nocturnal’ means and thought about some other nocturnal animals that we know.

We explored lots of art skills this week. We learned how to create a dark background by colour washing the page with a range of different blues. We used chalk and chalk pens to create a moon and stars and experimented with smudging the chalk. After this we tore up black sugar paper to make a tree trunk and branch. On the final day, we watched a youtube video on how to draw a barn owl. It was very difficult and we all tried really hard to draw our wonderful owls. Everyone was really pleased with the final outcome!
