What a fantastic day we had celebrating VE Day together! On Thursday, 8th of May, our school was a sea of red, white, and blue as everyone came in with their best celebration attitude. We kicked off the afternoon with a whole-school assembly where we learned about the history of VE Day. We listened to music from the 1940s, had a little dance and waved our flags as we sat together in the hall. The upper school students shared what they’d learned about World War II, and we all reflected on our gratitude to those who lost their lives. We thought about the the relief felt by those who lived through the war and how lucky we are today. We held a two minute silence in remembrance.
In our classrooms, we got creative by making air bombers from card and flying them across the playground, wrote diary entries imagining what it was like to be there on VE Day, and decorated our own bunting to add to the festive atmosphere. Then, we headed out to the playground for our VE Day street party. Long tables were lined with Union Jack bunting and VE Day-themed tablecloths, and everyone gathered on picnic blankets, enjoying cakes, squash, and other delicious treats, sharing stories and laughter with true community spirit. Year 6 guided their buddies along the tables and helped them choose their food before sitting with them on the playground, which was lovely to see. We returned to our classes to play traditional games like Duck Duck Goose, hula hooping, and hopscotch. These games, enjoyed by children in the 1940s, brought a sense of continuity and fun to our day.
We were absolutely blown away by the amazing entries in our VE Day art competition! The creativity and effort from all year groups was truly impressive. Thank you to everyone at home who helped support the children to enter the competition!
