MUSIC

At Aston St Mary’s, we are proud of the music making that we do, both in our class lessons and in extra curricular music. Every child from Year 2 learns to play the recorder and read music.  The children are taught how to sing in tune and to listen critically to various types of music written by a variety of composers.  We listen to different composers in assembly, with a different composer’s music chosen each half-term.

Our lessons are based on Inside Music by the Voices Foundation.   This is supplemented by working towards church services at Easter and Christmas and with songs for our summer performance.

We follow progressive steps of skills and concepts. Listening and performing, singing, timbre, playing, dynamics, pitch, rhythm and tempo.

Music education has been proved to benefit the children’s understanding of other subjects. Mathematics, listening skills, learning of languages, reading and verbal skills. It improves working memory and long-term memory for visual stimuli.

Children are given the chance to sing in the choir and play in the school orchestra outside of school hours.
