In reception, children develop a sense of place. Geographical enquiry skills are introduced through cross curricular learning links to other areas of learning such as maths. They develop their spatial thinking and language skills through movement, pictorial representations, and the use of symbols. They discuss distance, position and direction in order to help make sense of their environment within the immediate locality. They begin to understand that we can represent our “real world” in an abstract way. This knowledge and skills form vital building blocks for all later geographical enquiry and locational knowledge beyond our immediate locality.
