Years Five and Six have had lots of fun learning about electrical circuits during their science lessons this half term. We began by thinking about what we already knew – I was very impressed by how much the children could remember from their learning in Year Four. Next, we were set the challenge of making a bulb light up using a battery and two wires but without a bulb holder. We learnt that one wire had to connect to the base of the bulb and the other to the side.
After this, we had lots of fun exploring circuits using other electrical components including motors and buzzers. As part of our learning, we have completed two PPPOP investigations – one to explore how we can make a bulb brighter or a buzzer louder and the next to explore how the length of the wire affects the brightness of a bulb. For these investigations, the children were very excited to use our electronics kits which made constructing the circuits more reliable.
Below are some examples of the children’s learning as well as lots of photos, and even a video, of their practical investigations.
