Year 3 Science – Animals including humans

This term, Year 3 have been busy exploring the fascinating topic of Animals Including Humans in Science. Our budding biologists have been learning all about skeletons, bones, nutrition, and the different diets animals need to stay healthy.

We began by looking at the different types of skeletons found in the animal kingdom: endoskeletons, exoskeletons, and hydrostatic skeletons. We discussed why animals need skeletons for support, movement, and protection. The children were amazed to discover that while humans and most vertebrates have bones inside their bodies, creatures like insects wear their skeletons on the outside!

Next, we explored our own human skeletons in more detail, identifying and naming key bones such as the skull, spine, ribs, and femur. Using fun activities and diagrams, the children learned how our skeletons help us stand tall and move around.

We then moved on to healthy eating, using the Eatwell Plate to understand how a balanced diet keeps our bodies strong and full of energy. We also learned about the seven nutrients that our bodies need to stay healthy: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre, and water. The class discussed how each one plays a special role in helping us grow and stay active.

Finally, we compared the diets of different animals, classifying them as herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores, and discovering how their teeth and body structures are adapted to what they eat.

To top it all off, we received some incredible home learning projects, including 3D skeleton models, colourful Eatwell Plates, and animal diet posters. The creativity and effort shown by our Year 3 learners (and their families) was absolutely outstanding.

We are so proud of how curious, thoughtful, and imaginative the children have been throughout this topic. What a wonderful way to learn about the amazing world of animals and humans!
