MUSIC
At Aston St Mary’s, we are proud of the music making that we do, both in our class lessons and in extra curricular music. Every child from Year 2 learns to play the recorder and read music. Many children also take up the opportunity to learn other instruments e.g. piano, clarinet and violin. The children are taught how to sing in tune and to listen critically to various types of music by a variety of musicians and composers. We love to listen to a range of different genres of music in assembly; we learn interesting facts about different musicians and composers from all eras.
We have created a unique music curriculum for our school using Charanga lessons and resources. This is supplemented by working towards church services at Harvest, Easter and Christmas and with songs for our summer performance.
We follow progressive steps of skills and concepts. Listening and performing, singing, timbre, playing, dynamics, pitch, rhythm and tempo.
Music education has been proved to benefit the children’s understanding of other subjects. Mathematics, listening skills, learning of languages, reading and verbal skills. It improves working memory and long-term memory for visual stimuli.
Children are also given the chance to sing in the school choir and instrumentalists perform in our music concerts; these provide a wonderful opportunity for even those at the very beginning of their musical journey to perform to a wider audience.
