Everyday Materials

We had to investigate which material would be best suited for making an umbrella. We tested four different materials: plastic, paper, felt and foil. We predicted that foil and plastic would be best as they were waterproof. We then tested them, observed and recorded our results. We found that although foil was waterproof, it ripped very easily so would not make a good umbrella. Plastic was waterproof and strong so was a good material. We then thought about why a desk (waterproof and strong) would not make a good umbrella. We thought it would be too heavy to hold above your head.

We are looking at what materials objects are made from and describing their properties. We have been sorting materials based on their properties. We realised that some objects can fit into more than one group.

We have looked at man-made and natural objects.

We will also investigate which materials are the best for specific purposes (you wouldn’t want a teapot made out of chocolate!).
