DT: Cam Toys (January 2024)

What an exciting start we have had to the term! On our very first day back after the Christmas break, we enjoyed a DT day. We began by learning about cams; we learnt that cams rotate on an axle and that a follower sits on top of the cam which will move up and down as the cam rotates. Different shaped cams create different movement. We also learnt that, if the follower is not placed centrally over the cam, then it will also rotate. We made card models of different shaped cams.

Next, we looked at some toys that use cams and researched lots of different ideas online. Once we understood how they worked, we drew our own designs based upon our own interests and ideas.

At last, it was time to begin making our cam toys. There was a quiet buzz in the classroom for the rest of the day as we independently got on with our ambitious task! It required us to measure precisely, cut carefully, drill sensibly and construct effectively in order to produce some impressive outcomes. We’re all very proud of what we achieved!

Our finished toys were fantastic! Please take a look below at the photos and videos.
