Geography – Hot and Cold Places

Hot and Cold Places

In Haffydown, we have had a fun start to our Geography lessons this side of Christmas! Our learning so far has covered the 7 continents, the 5 oceans, the Equator, the hemispheres, the Tropics and the changes in climate around the world. We kick-started our unit with an interactive throwing and catching game, using our inflatable globe, to activate our prior knowledge. We learnt the continent song and identified each continent on a map, before working in pairs to carefully mould playdough over every continent, to understand its position and shape. We noticed how vastly different countries can be within a continent and compared the physical features of the landscapes through Google Earth.

To get a deeper understanding of the Equator, the Northern and Southern hemispheres, the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, Haffydown transformed themselves into globes and worked together to add these points of references. We had lots of fun trying to get the lines in the right place! We are really looking forward to learning more about climates and journeys around the world!
