Roman Mosaics – October 2023

To link with our learning about Roman Britain, we have been looking at mosaics in Art. We learnt about how mosaics were used to decorated the floors in Roman villas and other buildings. We were fascinated to see just how impressive these could be when we visited Verulamium Museum. We noticed that the mosaics tended to have a border pattern with a central motif.

We experimented with possible border designs on squared paper before practising our printing technique to replicate the tiny stones or tiles (tesserae) used by the Romans. To create our final piece, we first printed our border pattern and then added a simple motif in the centre.
