Monsters: An Owner’s Guide – English

Our English unit on explanation texts began with an in depth look at ‘Monsters: An Owner’s Guide’ by Jonathan Emmett and Mark Oliver. We loved reading this book! It’s a funny and cheeky book that inspired us to write our own user manuals for new monster owners. We received a letter from the Monstermatic Toy Company, asking for our help as they were short staffed. They wanted us to ensure customers were replied to when they (inevitably) complained about their new monster purchases. Once we had finished looking at the features of explanation texts, we used these to reply to customers. Then, we started brainstorming exciting ideas for our guides. We chose between using our class worry monster or our own made up monster, as our focus for our writing, and we put our new drawing skills from art to good use! We edited our work in pairs and read our work out loud to check our writing style was suitable. We are extremely pleased with our final pieces and we really enjoyed reading them aloud to each other in class and during Golden Time.

We started looking at explanations by trying to explain what we thought would happen when we dropped the marble down the run. We changed the set up of it a few times to get the best outcome and we finally knocked the dominoes down!
