English: Stone Girl, Bone Girl (January 2024)

In English, we have enjoyed reading the touching story of the life of palaeontologist Mary Anning. We read two books: Stone Girl, Bone Girl and The Fossil Girl. This unit also supports our current learning in science about Evolution and Inheritance.

For our home learning, we carried out our own research to find out more details about her life. The pieces that we bought into school were so impressive that we made a class book with them. There are a few pages below for you to enjoy.

Next, we wrote a biography about Mary’s life. In these, we included details of her early years and her happy childhood years exploring the beach with her much loved father. It was he who inspired her passion for fossils (or ‘curiosities’) and he who taught her all the skills she needed to pursue her interest.

Our final challenge was to write in role as Mary Anning; this gave us an opportunity to reflect upon life from her perspective whilst developing our ‘writer’s voice’.
