DT and Art – Photo Frames and William Morris

Our first few days back in school after Christmas were full of exciting Art and Design Technology. Before Christmas, we worked on sketching and block printing in the style of William Morris, with a focus on flora and fauna, symmetry and natural colour tones. We used our beautiful pencil sketches of leaves and flowers to fill our photo frames.

To make their photo frames, Haffydown started by designing for a specific person and then they finalised their decoration ideas to compliment their art work. Then it was onto measuring and sawing the wood! It was very exciting using saws for the first time! Haffydown then stuck their wood pieces together and strengthened their joins with photo corners.

An important part of the photo frame design process was to make sure the backing board could stand up as a freestanding structure. We practiced first with cardboard and then made our final stands for our frames. Haffydown worked independently and used lollipop sticks, cardboard and paper in different creative styles. Haffydown showed fantastic ingenuity as they tested their stands and helped each other overcome design flaws to develop sturdy stands.

After Haffydown had finished their wonderful photo frames and filled them with their William Morris style sketches, they evaluated their design process.
